In der analogen Ära des Filmemachens, ermöglichte das 'China Girl' die Farbechtheit der Filmrolle zu testen ohne die anderen tausende Frames der Filmrolle anschauen zu müssen. Die Hautfarbe des 'China Girl' und die Farbtafeln die sie in die Kamera hielt, dienten als Referenz für den Rest der Filmrolle. Wie die 'China Girls' zu ihrem Namen kommen, ist nicht eindeutig geklärt. Einige Stimmen sagen, asiatische Frauen wären unter den ersten Modellen gewesen. Her skintone and the color bars she was holding into the camera worked as a reference for the rest of the film reel. It is not sure how the China Girls gained their nickname. Some theories suggest that Asian women were among the earliest models. Another theory suggests that they got their nickname because many of the women in the pictures wore their hair in tight chignons that caused their eyes to slant. In my image, I am posing as a 'China Girl' with a direct reference to those Screen Test Models. As the movie following the 'China Girl' is missing, the picture itself becomes an absurd iconic portrait, an image lacking the immanent function of its reference.
